His Holiness Filaret, Patriarch of Kyiv and All
Rus-Ukraine explained…
“………they are deceiving the faithful when
Patriarch Mstyslav is given the title posthumously of Patriarch in Ukraine and
Metropolitan in the United States”.
Kyiv
Patriarchate
Bridgeport, CT
On Sunday, June
22, 2003, Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church ─ Kyiv Patriarchate
celebrated its 50th anniversary. For this special occasion His
Holiness Filaret, Patriarch of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine, on a pastoral visit to
the US, celebrated the Divine Liturgy. With the church filled to capacity, many
of the faithful stood outside the church doors in the light rain to hear His
Holiness deliver an inspiring homily and anniversary congratulations.
The banquet hall
at Villa Bianca in Seymore, CT was also filled to capacity as over 400 guests
arrived to participate in the festivities. Representatives of parish boards as
well as clergy from Cleveland, New York City, Bound Brook, Florida, Chicago and
Detroit extended warm greetings to His Holiness Patriarch Filaret and
congratulatory remarks to Holy Trinity parishioners.
Warm greeting
were extended from members of the Board of Trustees of St. Volodymyr Cathedral
in NYC as well as by Mr. Wolodymyr Mohuchy from Holy Ascension Church, Clifton,
NJ and Mr. Vitalij Grechniv of St. Michael’s Parish, Uniondale, LI
A delegation of
12 members from St. Andrew’s Brotherhood, So. Bound Brook, NJ attended the
liturgy and banquet. Of special note was a pledge to Patriarch Filaret to
continue the Brotherhood’s support of the seminarians at the Spiritual Academy
in Kyiv, Ukraine and the monetary gift to Holy Trinity Parish made by Mr. Ihor
Sawon, President of St. Andrews Brotherhood.
In his remarks
Patriarch Filaret characterized as “deceiving the faithful” when Patriarch
Mstyslav is given the title posthumously of “Patriarch in Ukraine and
Metropolitan in United States”.
“How can the head
of a united church be both a ‘Patriarch’ and a ‘Metropolitan’ at the same time?
This is not in accordance with Orthodox Canons. But some bishops here in the
United States want the faithful to believe that UOC-USA was never part of the
Kyiv Patriarchate established by the 1st Patriarch of Ukraine and
All-Rus, His Holiness Mstyslav”.
On Monday, June
23, His Holiness Patriarch Filaret served a memorial Panachyda to a capacity
filled Holy Trinity Church on the 10th anniversary of Patriarch
Mstyslav’s repose.
Continuing his
pastoral visit on Thursday, June 26, 2003, His Holiness Patriarch Filaret will
conduct an Ecumenical Service for the union of all Christians at the Ukrainian
Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Blessed Mother of God in North Port Florida.
Participating in the service will be bishops and clergy from various religious confessions including
Ukrainian Greek Catholics, Episcopalians, Roman Catholics, Protestants and
Ukrainian Evangelists.
On Friday, June
27, 2003, His Holiness Patriarch Filaret, accompanied by Bishop Stepan Bilak,
will conduct Liturgical Services at St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in
North Port, Florida
